Coffee & Toast

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, the historic community room at the Hotel Cecil comes alive. Once the site of the first public Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Los Angeles in 1940, the room continues its long tradition of bringing people together in support of one another. Coffee is poured, breakfast is shared, and residents gather to begin the day in community.

Coffee & Toast is one of the foundational programs of Friends of the Cecil. While it may look like a simple continental breakfast, it is much more than that. It provides a consistent place where residents can connect with neighbors, check in with one another, and build the relationships that make an intentional supportive community possible.

We believe wellness begins with connection. A welcoming place to gather can reduce isolation, strengthen friendships, and create opportunities for encouragement, mutual support, and belonging. Around the breakfast table, people celebrate successes, share concerns, offer practical advice, and simply enjoy one another's company. Those everyday interactions are an important part of building a healthy community.

Because Coffee & Toast brings residents together on a regular basis, it also creates opportunities for quiet intervention when someone may be struggling. Volunteers and neighbors notice changes that might otherwise go unseen. A familiar face missing from breakfast, someone withdrawing from conversation, or a resident who simply seems different can prompt a caring conversation. Often, the most important first step is listening.
